Man collapses after eating a red-hot GHOST CHILLI during a chilli-eating contest
After tying for first place at the Brighton tournament, and eating one of the world's hottest chillis, the man became unwell and had to be taken to hospital
A MAN collapsed after scoffing a red-hot ghost chilli and dozens of others in a chilli-eating contest.
He was taken to hospital when he became confused, disorientated and sweaty.
The drama came as he went head to head with UK Chilli Queen Shahina Waseem, who is unbeaten in more than 25 competitions.
The pair tied in the event on Brighton seafront, but the man became ill around two hours later.
He was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital and thought to have been discharged following treatment.
The ghost chilli is one of the world’s hottest with a Scoville rating of more than one million — compared with up to 8,000 for jalapenos.
Doctors have warned of the dangers of eating very hot chillies, saying they can potentially kill.
They say “thunderclap” headaches can cause blinding pain for hours.
The headaches are caused by the sudden tightening of the vessels that supply blood to the brain.
Karl Muzio, of the Fiery Foods UK Festival, said: “Hours after the man tied the contest one of our medics was called over.As a precaution he was taken to hospital for treatment.”
