RELIEF FOR RENTERS

Tenants ‘should get six months’ notice before being forced to move to stop rogue landlords booting them out suddenly’

The new policy from the Lib Dems would stop landlords kicking out their tenants suddenly

Housing prices has risen at it slowest pace in five years

BRITS should get at least six months’ notice before they can be thrown out of their rented homes, the Lib Dems said today.

The party called on the Government to crack down on rogue landlords and give tenants new rights.

And they proposed a new British Housing Company which could intervene to boost homebuilding and drive down costs.

At the party conference in Brighton, activists approved a plan to impose new curbs on dodgy landlords.

They are pushing for a change to the law which would mean that long-term tenants are entitled to at least six months’ notice if their landlords want to evict them.

That would reduce the risk of families being left homeless at short notice if they lived in rented accommodation.

Another plank of the policy is to found a British Housing Company responsible for buying up unused land which is being hoarded by developers.

The land would be used for new social housing - reducing the cost of renting or buying a home across the country as a whole.

Lib Dem housing spokesman Wera Hobhouse told The Sun: “Radical action must be taken to ensure people have the right to live in an affordable and secure home.

“With our country in the midst of a housing crisis and homelessness at a record high, the Government’s inaction is a dereliction of duty.

“If we are to truly tackle the housing crisis, we must embark on a large programme to rebuild our social housing stock.

“We must also alleviate the insecurity faced by many tenants in the private rented sector such as through giving tenants a minimum of six months’ notice before they have to leave the property.”
