Currently Labour’s trade union backers have kept the party committed to Trident amid fears thousands of well-paid defence jobs would be slashed otherwise.
But Mr Hamilton believes his plan would persuade them that workers can be redeployed in other sectors - adding he “sincerely hopes” a u-turn is in sight.
Jeremy Corbyn said he would appoint a Minister for Peace if he ever got into power, choosing lefty Mr Hamilton with a brief to "reduce violence, war and conflict".
