UK weather forecast – Two months of warm but windy weather on way as 2018 is on course to be ‘one of the hottest years ever’
The Met Office says that temperatures are likely to be above average as stormy weather stops the mercury dropping in the first half of winter
THE UK is in for a warm but wet and windy end to the year which could mean that 2018 ends up as one of the hottest years ever.
The Met Office believes that a weaker than previously thought El Niño will make the next couple of months warmer than average in Britain.
But the balmy weather will come at a cost as stormy winds and rainfall are also more likely in the first half of winter.
If temperatures do stay above average throughout the winter months then 2018 could go down as one of the hottest on record following a blistering summer.
And the warm temperatures should start coming after a cold but bright start to the week tomorrow, with highs similar to today of around 15C in Devon and Cornwall and lows of 6C in northern Scotland.
Alex Burkill of the Met Office told The Sun Online: "I think the general gist for this week is temperatures will be creeping up, so after a really cold start on Monday morning, I think tonight’s the last of the really cold nights for a little while at least."
The Met Office is also predicting that the warm but windy weather will then quickly roll in across the country.
Alex said: "From what we are seeing, it does look like a weakened El Niño is likely as we go through winter.
"As a result, what happens more often than not in an El Niño phase is that we get the first half of winter is quite unsettled, so it’ll be wet and windy at times, but the second half is dryer and colder than average."

The southeast will stay sunny throughout Monday while cloud and rain will roll in across Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England.
Later in the week there will be spells of rain while it remains bright, though there may be the odd gale blowing in the far north.
It will remain mostly sunny in the south as the weather becomes generally warmer in the south up to around 18C or 19C.
