A SECOND Brexit referendum would destroy trust in British democracy, Theresa May warned today.

The PM ruled out holding a new vote on the EU or a General Election as she vowed to “deliver on Brexit”.

She told BBC Breakfast: “People have had a vote, we voted in 2016. The British people voted to leave the EU.

"I think it's important for trust in politics and politicians that people can now feel that we as a Government are delivering on that vote.

"We gave people a choice, they chose. We should be delivering on that choice."

Speaking at the Tory conference in Birmingham, Mrs May also insisted she won’t give in to Labour demands that she calls a General Election which could see her thrown out of power.

The PM said: “We’re acting in the national interest - it is not in the national interest to have a General Election.”

Asked how long she will last at No 10, Mrs May told the BBC's Today programme: "I am in this for the long term - not just for the Brexit deal but also for the domestic agenda that we’re setting out at this conference."

Mrs May admitted she was bruised by her clash with EU leaders at Salzburg last month - saying she needed "a stiff drink" when she got home to husband Philip.

She told LBC: "I don’t remember what Philip said about it - I think when I got home he probably poured me a stiff drink."

Hitting out at bullying Eurocrats who won't be straight with the UK, the PM added: "I’ve shown nothing but respect to the European Union and the UK deserves the same."

But she also slapped down Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt for comparing Brussels bosses to the Soviet Union.

The Prime Minister said: “As I sit around that table in the European Union, there are countries there who used to be part of the Soviet Union. They are now democratic countries.

“I can tell you that the two organisations are not the same.”

Mrs May will make her big conference speech tomorrow - although first she must see off a challenge from Boris Johnson who will address activists at a fringe event this afternoon.

She insisted there won't be a repeat of last year's meltdown where a bad cough meant she could barely finish her speech - telling LBC: "I assume you've been able to hear everything I've been saying.

"I will be ensuring that I will be standing up there and speaking strongly, and speaking strongly not just about getting the best Brexit deal for the UK but about the real opportunities there are for people here in the UK for the future."
