Asda optical illusion goes viral as black and white display makes shoppers think they have gone colour blind
AN Asda shopper feared she had gone colour blind when she spotted an eerily colourless aisle in the supermarket’s clothing section.
A colourful debate has been sparked online after Holly McKee’s photograph of the children’s clothing aisle at the supermarket giant’s branch in Dundee Milton went viral.
The 23-year-old’s bizarre photograph of a wholly grey wall of clothes next to a section of vividly coloured dresses, taken on Friday, has been the subject of online scrutiny by people who believe the photo must have been edited.
Film graduate Holly claims when she saw the sight while shopping for Halloween costumes she needed confirmation from sisters Abbie, 20, and Emily, 13, that she hadn’t suddenly lost the ability to see colour.
Holly, from Dundee, Scotland, said: “Initially I thought my eyes were going funny, which is why I needed confirmation from my sisters to know it wasn’t just me. I’ve never seen anything like it.
“I had to do a double take when I saw it. I was with my younger sister Emily, so we went to the section for younger girls to try and find her something spooky for Halloween.
“I think people have gone mad because it’s quite similar to the blue and black dress from a couple years ago, and some people don’t believe it’s real and so it’s playing tricks on people’s minds.
“I’m just happy I’m definitely not colour-blind.”
Holly’s viral post has racked up more than 40,000 shares and 80,000 likes – but not everyone agrees that the picture is legitimate.
In a bid to quash naysayers, Holly made the 25-minute trip back to Asda on Tuesday to take a video of the mind-boggling optical illusion.
Holly said: “Everyone has gone crazy about it, which is why I filmed a video to show that it was all real.
“I went back to Asda and got my sister to stand in front of it and wave her hands in front of it to show it’s real and wasn’t edited.
“People still don’t really believe me, but more people have come around since I posted the video.”
The optical illusion is reminiscent of the 2015 internet sensation: the blue and black or white and gold dress.
Another optical illusion that swept the internet was the strawberries that appeared red but weren't - and the latest one, from earlier this year, was trainers that were either pink and white or green and grey.
Many of the negative responses to her picture state that a children’s clothing section would never be completely grey.
The retail assistant said: “Many didn’t believe the picture because there was a Mickey Mouse top that was grey, and you don’t normally see that.
“I think it’s amazing though, to see some gender-neutral clothing for younger people for people who don’t know what colour they want to buy.
“I think it’s a great thing that Asda are doing, so I’m surprised that Asda haven’t reached out to confirm my story to the doubters out there.”
