THIS is the creepy dating video made by the prime suspect believed to have murdered Suzy Lamplugh at the height of his crime spree.
John Cannan sneered at the 'inflated egos' and 'inner weakness' of women while filming the personal ad for Suitor Dating Agency in September 1987.
The interview was recorded little more than a year after estate agent Suzy, 25, vanished after going to meet a client named 'Mr Kipper' in Fulham, South West London.
Just weeks after the video he kidnapped and murdered Shirley Banks in Bristol having tried to kidnap a woman at gunpoint the day before.
Suzy's body has never been found. Police are currently digging at the former home of his mother in Sutton Coldfield, West Mids, in the hope of solving the 32-year mystery.
In the video, Cannan - dressed smartly in a suit but rocking back and forth throughout - is asked to list the qualities of his ideal partner.
He replies: "I have a dislike of inflated egos. People who are... the 'look at me, I'm great' type.
"I don't like that, I can't handle that sort of inner weakness. I don't like that at all, I just like normal, average people."
Asked what he does like in a partner, he says: "Apart from the physical side... someone who's pleasant, who's natural, who's relaxed, somebody who's calm."
He adds he 'couldn't blame' a woman for being career-orientated and lists Gandhi and 'philosophers like Bertrand Russell' among people he admires.
JC: "I have a dislike of inflated egos - people who are the 'look at me, I'm great' type. I don't like that, I can't handle that sort of inner weakness."
Interviewer: "That kind of pretention?"
JC: "Yeah, I don't like that at all. I just like just normal, average people."
Interviewer: "What do you look for in a person? What attracts you?"
JC: "I think apart from the physical side, again I think somebody who’s pleasant, who's natural, who's relaxed, somebody who's calm – just pleasant, someone nice."
Interviewer: "You’re not worrying about if they’re career orientated?"
JC: "No; no, no; no, no. As somebody who’s career orientated myself, I couldn’t blame them for that. No, not at all."
Cops searching for her body are continuing to dig up a garden at the former of Cannan’s mother.
The Sun today revealed how a damning official review of the initial police inquiry said Det Supt Malcolm Hackett fell out with Diana Lamplugh because he believed she was behind media reports linking Cannan to Suzy.
It prejudiced his view of Cannan to such an extent he failed to properly interview him, put him in ID lines ups or check his alibi for the day Suzy vanished. Instead, Hackett told his team to try to eliminate Cannan as a suspect.
Diana and Paul Lamplugh raised questions about Cannan after he was arrested in October 1987 for the murder of Shirley Banks.
They urged police to consider him as a potential suspect over the disappearance the previous year of estate agent Suzy, 25.
She had vanished after going to meet a client called Mr Kipper in Fulham, South West London.
The report tells how the Lamplugh’s initially had a good rapport with the police team investigating Suzy’s disappearance.
But this changed when the previous lead officer retired and Det Supt Hackett took over.
The Met Police review report, written 14 years ago but kept under wraps until now, said that deteriorating relationship became a “significant issue.”
Det Supt Hackett was convinced that Press reports linking Cannan to Suzy came from the Lamplughs.
Cannan had a history of sexual violence against women that dated back to when he was 14.
At the time of Suzy’s disappearance he was on day release from a bail hostel after serving five years of an eight-year rape sentence.
Cannan is suspected of a brief romance with Suzy before she called it off. It is thought he murdered her because she rejected him. Cannan kidnapped and murdered Shirley in Bristol on 8 October 1987. He was arrested three weeks later.
The first links between the Banks and Lamplugh cases were made in the media the day after his arrest.
Diana Lamplugh died in 2011 aged 75. Husband Paul died in June aged 87. The review report led to a new homicide investigation led by Det Supt Jim Dickie.
Mr Dickie, now retired, said of the original 1986 probe: “There were glaring errors.”
Cannan was jailed for life in July 1988 for Shirley’s murder, an attempted kidnap and a rape.
Despite powerful circumstantial evidence, the CPS ruled in November 2002 there was insufficient evidence to charge him with Suzy’s murder. But Scotland Yard held a press conference to say officers believed he had murdered her.
