Who is Suella Braverman?

Suella Braverman is a British politician who was elected as the Tory MP for Fareham, Hampshire, in May 2015.

She was then re-elected in 2017 and 2019.

Braverman was born Sue-Ellen Cassiana Fernandes on April 3, 1980, to a Kenyan mother and Mauritian father.

She was born in Harrow and grew up in Wembley.

She studied law at Queens' College, Cambridge, and completed a Master's in European and French law at Pantheon-Sorbonne University.

During her undergraduate studies, Braverman was President of the Cambridge University Conservative Association.

She qualified as an attorney in New York state after sitting the NY Bar exams.

On her she states she is a Conservative because "we are the party that says it doesn't matter where you start, it's about where you are going".

The news broke on the morning of November 13, 2023, after Braverman was accused of fuelling Armistice Day tensions by criticising Met Police chiefs.

She said in a short statement: "It has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve as Home Secretary.

"I will have more to say in due course."

Braverman first became Home Secretary in September 2022, when then-Prime Minster Liz Truss brought her in to replace Priti Patel.

Shortly after, on October 19, 2022, The Sun reported that Braverman had been sacked from her role.

However, she was reappointed to the position after new PM Rishi Sunak reinstated her on October 25, 2023.

Prior to her stints as Home Secretary, former Tory PM Boris Johnson appointed Braverman as Attorney General.

She also served on the Education Select Committee and as a Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Treasury.

She held this position from February 13, 2020, until March 2, 2021, and then again from September 10, 2021, to September 6, 2022.

Her absence was due to maternity leave.

Braverman backed leaving the EU and was appointed Brexit Secretary in January 2018.

She resigned from the post in November 2018 over the unacceptable terms of Theresa May's Withdrawal Agreement.

Was Suella Braverman running for Prime Minister?

Braverman did run to become the new Tory leader to replace Johnson as Prime Minister and was officially named as a candidate on April 12, 2022.

She promised to slash taxes and shrink the size of the state but was eliminated in the second round of voting in July 2022 after receiving just 27 votes.

Braverman then got behind Truss, who ultimately won the contest and became the new Prime Minister on September 6, 2022.

Her short-lived tenure came to an end just a few weeks later on October 20, 2023, just a day after Braverman's resignation as Home Secretary.

How did Suella Braverman vote on Brexit?

Braverman is a supporter of Brexit and said that leaving the EU "would best serve our national interest".

In July 2022 she told : "Brexit was not a revolution, it was a restoration."

She continued: "A government I lead will safeguard Brexit, take on the Blairite liberal consensus and get this country back on track."

Is Suella Braverman married and does she have children?

Suella married Rael Braverman in February 2018 at a wedding that was attended by over 100 people.

The couple have two children together - son George, who was born in July 2019, and daughter Gabriella, who was born in March 2021.

Braverman became the first cabinet minister to go on maternity leave after the birth of her daughter.
