Who will be the next Brexit Secretary? Possible candidates following Dominc Raab’s resignation
DOMINIC Raab dramatically resigned as Brexit Secretary following Theresa May releasing the details of her plan to leave the EU.
Here are the front runners to replace him at the Department for exiting the European Union.
Michael Gove
Michael Gove is the favourite to replace Raab at the helm of the Department for Exiting the European Union, with rumours that he has already been offered the job.
According to the Daily Telegraph the Environment Secretary is weighing up an offer from the Prime Minister to become the new Brexit Secretary.
Another course he could take is to resign from the Cabinet entirely, following Raab, Work and Pensions Secretary Esther McVey and five others out of the door.
Gove has reportedly said he will only take the job if he is given the chance to renegotiate the terms of the deal the PM thrashed out with Brussels.
The prominent Brexiteer was said to have been supportive of the Prime Minister’s position at the emergency Cabinet meeting on Wednesday. He also backed Mrs May’s Chequers deal in July.
Jacob Rees-Mogg
The backbencher is unlikely to be elevated to Cabinet while Theresa May clings on to the keys to Number 10.
He has already sent a letter calling for a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister.
Rees-Mogg and Boris Johnson led an emergency meeting where plotters were set to launch a vote of no confidence in the PM after a wave of resignations over her Brexit deal.
He chairs the powerful European Research Group of pro-Brexit Tories, today called for Mrs May to resign - adding that a Brexiteer such as BoJo should replace her.
If May is forced from office this could be the Honourable member for the 18th Century's first ministerial role.
Andrea Leadsom
Theresa May's old leadership rival and current Leader of the House of Commons was a prominent Leave campaigner.
She has so far been steadfastly loyal to the PM and helped steer numerous Brexit related bills through the house.
With her own leadership ambitions apparently over this could be one of her final chances for one of the top jobs.
David Lidington
The PM's number two David Lidington may be drafted in to the post as May attempts to restore some loyalty to her ranks.
The Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster and Minister for the Cabinet Office has been Theresa May's de facto deputy since the reshuffle in January.
However his status as a Remainer would likely further anger pro-Brexit Tory MPs and increase the risk of a vote of no confidence in the PM.
Liam Fox
Fox is the last of the Three Brexiteers appointed by May, the other two being David Davis and Boris Johnson.
As a prominent Leave campaigner he could potentially placate the anger in the Brexit supporting backbenches of the Tory Party.
The role would help flesh out his current role as well at the Department for International Trade if broad free trade deals with other nations are off the table.
Penny Mordaunt
The International Development Secretary was a prominent figure in the Leave campaign and her appointment could placate some ardent Brexiteers.
It may also be a carrot to keep her in the Cabinet as rumours of her resignation continue to swirl over May's "soft Brexit" deal announced yesterday.
Mordaunt has remained tight-lipped over whether she will resign from her cabinet role.
