A TOWN'S Christmas tree could be the worst in the UK after locals slammed it as "horrid", a "joke" and a "monstrosity".

The 20ft artificial green cone in Northallerton, North Yorkshire, is surrounded by a 7ft metal fence and is completely devoid of decoration save for a single silver star on top.

Bemused locals have taken to Facebook to complain about the tree describing it as a "giant pointy hat" and "rubbish".

One user commented: "Hideous monstrosity. God damn awful."

Another said: "Looks like a giant green parking cone flipping horrible," while another added, "No tree is better than a bad tree."

One angry resident commented: "For the County Town of North Yorkshire this is an absolute disgrace. Thirsk Christmas tree has beaten Northallerton hands down for years.

"Even Sowerby has a beautiful Christmas tree every year."

The tree was erected by Business Improvement District (BID) Northallerton, an organisation which aims to improve the town's shopping experience.

Northallerton Town Council issued a statement in which it said it was not responsible for the structure and had no power over it.

A spokesperson said: "Following a great deal of attention regarding the BID group's cone Christmas Tree on the Town Square we would like to raise some points directly from the Town Council.

"As like every year the Town Council receive a very kind donation from Sam Turner and Sons of a wonderful, real Christmas tree to which we always place on the Town Hall balcony."

But one local responded: "Doesn't make any difference who has provided this still just awful. Imagine visitors seeing this, not impressed!!!"

In 2013 locals of Stockton-on-Tees questioned whether their Christmas tree was the worst in the UK after it appeared on their high street.

This year's contender is Rebecca Rowland's tree in her Tyldesley home that was dubbed "half-dead".

The tree was also an artificial cone, and was covered in white fabric.

BID Northallerton have been contacted for comment but have yet to respond.

Some locals did speak up in defence of the tree with David Jennings posting: "It's a modern style christmas tree, I'm sure it will look great when the lights are on and the installation work is finished.

"Perhaps this is partly due to the restrictions we face in Northallerton verses other local towns and not as black & white as it first appears."
