A STUNNING home in Scotland’s West Highlands has been named RIBA House of the Year by Grand Designs.
Lochside House scooped the 2018 prize as the winner was revealed in the final episode of the Channel 4 series.
The estate is formed of three finely-crafted buildings situated in a magical location on the edge of a Scottish loch.
And it’s perfectly integrated into the wild as it sits against a breathtaking backdrop of rugged mountains.
The "humble" piece of architecture, sitting on the edge of a lake, is described as a "perfect addition to the dream landscape".
The honour is awarded by the Royal Institute of British Architects (Riba) to the UK's best new architect-designed house.
All energy used at Lochside House comes from the sun and water is pulled up from a borehole.
The new home in the West Highlands was designed by Haysom Ward Miller Architects.
The house, owned by a ceramic artist, is formed of three finely-crafted buildings huddled together and clad in burnt Scottish larch, protected by a traditional drystone wall.
With roofs that "echo the distant mountains", judges said it is "perfectly integrated into the wild and rugged landscape".
Riba president Ben Derbyshire described the home as "truly breathtaking" and the "perfect addition to this dream landscape".
The six runners-up also brought unique qualities to the table.
Architect Takero Shimazaki, chair of the 2018 Riba House of the Year jury, said there was an "overwhelming sense of comfort, warmth and homeliness" inside the house.
The judge said it was "astonishing" that the owner's vision was not scuppered by the "remoteness and challenging weather".
Grand Designs presenter Kevin McCloud, who revealed the winner on Channel 4, said the house is "the kind of architecture we can all easily learn from and it's a way of building that we, in Britain, are getting really very good at".
Derbyshire added: “Lochside House is truly breathtaking.
"By containing its scale, sensitively positioning the crop of buildings on a promontory around established trees, and making use of local materials, HaysomWardMiller have created a home which perfectly responds to its exposed, unique location.
“I fell in love with the Scottish Highlands on a camping trip after university and dreamt one day of renovating or building a place to live and work.
“When I stumbled across the site in 2010 I knew immediately that I’d found the perfect spot and the process since then has been incredibly exciting.”
