Inside filthy Subway shop littered with mouse droppings and a strong stench of urine
The 'filthy and verminous' shop in Leicester has been shut down
THIS is the disgusting interior of a shutdown Subway sandwich shop that food safety officers deemed an "imminent risk" to public health.
The sarnie shop, in Belgrave in Leicester was shut down immediately on Monday after officers found its cellar "filthy and verminous".
They found rat and mouse droppings at the site, which led Leicester Magistrates to back the council's application for an emergency prohibition order.
This will remain in place until inspectors are happy that improvements have been made, reports .
Environment health officer Alison Cadmore told magistrates that after opening the hatch to the cellar she "immediately noted a strong smell of rat urine".
She added: "The rat droppings were over virtually everything. There were gaps and holes that allowed rats access to the shop from the cellar, including to the area above the false ceiling.
"I found mouse droppings littered above the customer area, above the servery and cooking area and above the rear storage area. I also found rat droppings above the servery area.
“There was a risk that droppings, loose bait and other debris could drop down into the food rooms.”
Magistrates were told mouse droppings were also found in the customers’ area, near the refuse bin, in the preparation area, by the oven and behind the coffee area, including inside the back of the unit.
She added: “There was extensive evidence of mouse and rat activity at the premises and that the poor structure made it easy for the rodents to navigate their way around the food areas."
Ms Cadmore told the court how the filthy and unhygienic state of the cellar provided ideal living conditions for the rats.
She also noted that there was no soap at the hand wash basin and the paper towel dispenser was empty.
The owner of the business shrugged off the allegations.
Mr Kanji said: “We have run this place for 15 years without any problems but recently there has been some building work round the back of the property.
