DONALD Trump branded Michael Cohen a "weak person" who is "lying" to get a reduced sentence.
The president reacted with scorn to his former lawyer's guilty plea today to accusations of lying to Congress about work he did on a Trump real estate project in Russia.
During a surprise court hearing, Cohen admitted to lying to the Senate intelligence committee about a plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow.
Cohen said he made the false statements to be consistent with Trump's "political message."
His lawyer says he continues to cooperate with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian election interference and possible coordination with Trump associates.
Cohen admitted making false statements in 2017 to a Senate intelligence committee.
In August, Cohen pleaded guilty to other federal charges involving his taxi businesses, bank fraud and his campaign work for Trump.
One of the prosecutors working with Special Counsel Robert Mueller was present in the courtroom.
Cohen became an executive at the Trump Organisation and by 2011 gained a reputation as The Donald's "pitbull".
He had bought several homes in buildings owned by Trump before joining his organisation and has been a high profile supporter and defender of him in the media for some years.
Trump's old attorney has vowed to protect his family and country first in an explosive interview distancing himself from the President.
The lawyer, who once said he would take a bullet for the billionaire businessman, said he would fight back if Trump or his legal team tried to discredit him.
Trump added as set off of Buenos Aires that he probably would meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin despite having expressed displeasure with Russian actions against Ukraine.
He said: "I probably will be meeting with President Putin.
"They would like to have it. I think it's a very good time to have the meeting."
He said he would get a final report during the flight on the tension in the region after Russia seized Ukrainian vessels near Crimea on Sunday.
"I'm getting a full report on the plane as to what happened with respect to that and that will determine what I'm going to be doing," he said.
He later backtracked on Twitter posting: "Based on the fact that the ships and sailors have not been returned to Ukraine from Russia, I have decided it would be best for all parties concerned to cancel my previously scheduled meeting in Argentina with President Vladimir Putin. I look forward to a meaningful Summit again as soon as this situation is resolved!"
