A powerful committee last month claimed he should be suspended for sexually harassing a women and offering “corrupt inducements to sleep with him”.

The 82 year-old was only saved when shameless peers voted to send the case back to the committee – claiming the victim hadn’t been cross examined.

Lord Lester has repeatedly described the allegations as “untrue”.

But last night a Liberal Democrat spokesman said: “Lord Lester has made the right decision in retiring from the House of Lords.

Previous sexual harassment allegations against the peer were from women's rights activist Jasvinder Sanghera

“The Liberal Democrats had supported the original report from the Privileges Committee that had recommended his suspension from the House.

The Committee ordered his ban for allegedly telling women’s rights campaigner Jasvinder Sanghera – “sleep with me and I will make you a baroness”.

In its report, the committee said a complaint had been received in November 2017 that Lord Lester "had sexually harassed the complainant, had offered her a corrupt inducement to have sexual relations with her, and had warned her of unspecified consequences if she did not accept his offer".

It added: "These allegations were connected to Lord Lester's conduct of his parliamentary duties."

The report also said Lord Lester had admitted telling another peer the name of the complainant and that she had been responsible for him being suspended by his party.

This was a breach of confidentiality rules, it said.
