A sickening video has emerged of warehouse workers beating escaping rats to death with poles

It is unclear where the footage was recorded, but it is believed to be in England, based on the men's accents.

As a digger picks up a huge chunk of debris from a pile, the assembled men wait for the disruption to prompt the desperate rats to scramble to safety as their home is destroyed.

As the first one bolts out from under the garbage, a man cries: "There's one! Get him!"

At one point in the video, a man kicks one of the animals so far it lands out of shot.

A People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) spokesperson said: "Anyone capable of mercilessly kicking and beating small, defenceless rats – who feel pain every bit as much as the dogs and cats we share our homes with – has deep-seated psychological issues.

“Authorities must now act quickly to track these sadists down and throw the book at them before more animals endure a similarly violent death.”

Elsewhere in the UK, a reindeer farm was exposed last month after undercover footage showed the animals being abused and malnourished.

Kept in cramped conditions, one of the animals had to be put down.
