Yorkshire Tea’s new biodegradable teabags spark outrage as they keep splitting and filling cups with sludge
Britain's second biggest tea supplier, Yorkshire, Tea have claimed that they are 'replacing the oil-based plastic' that seals current teabags but that it was 'early days'
CUPPA-loving Britain is steaming mad — because new eco-friendly tea bags are ruining our favourite brew.
Disgruntled drinkers are taking to social media in droves to complain that Yorkshire Tea’s biodegradable bags keep splitting in hot water and filling cups with sludge.
TV footie expert Darren Fletcher was among those enraged by the new bags, which no longer use plastic to stay sealed. The BT commentator said: “Shocking developments this morning in the Fletcher household — the normally reliable Yorkshire Tea Gold is shambolic.
“Every tea bag we have used has split. Dodgy box — or is it new paper? Things may never be the same again!”
Elizabeth Alker said: “Has anyone else noticed that Yorkshire Tea bags are quite burst-able?” Amy Moon posted a snap of a split one and said: “What’s going on? This is the second dodgy batch I’ve had in the last couple of months.”
Yorkshire Tea — the UK’s second biggest tea seller and advertised by triathletes Alistair and Jonny Brownlee — came clean yesterday after The Sun asked if it had altered its bags.
It said: “We’re switching to biodegradable bags, replacing the oil-based plastic that used to seal them. It’s early days so we’re very keen to hear feedback.”
Parent company Bettys and Taylors said: “We’ve had a technical issue with a batch of tea bags which are becoming unsealed during brewing.
“This has occurred due to a combination of factors including the fact that we’ve started to switch to plant-based tea bag paper. But this alone has not caused the issue.”
