A BRITISH woman who moved to the US with her American husband has been shot dead.
Liz Sutherland, 64, originally from Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, was gunned down in Birmingham, Alabama on Saturday night.
Liz died in a hail of bullets in the Southside area of the city, local media outlets
Friends said she was shot as she got out of her car at her apartment, which she had just moved into a fortnight ago.
Her sister Morag Sutherland Donlevy, who also lives in the US in Auburn, Pennsylvania, paid an emotional tribute to Liz on social media.
She said: “I read and re-read all the lovely condolences for Elizabeth and I cannot fathom the entire thing.
“My mind wanders to an image that I do not want to see. We believe in the hereafter and I know for sure my sister did.
“So, in that respect she is safe in the arms of angels. For me, I am a blank right now.”
Liz was also known by her married name Elizabeth Peterson. It's understood she was estranged from husband Edward Peterson.
Liz's friend Christine Bryant-Harden posted a poignant tribute on Facebook, saying: "Liz Sutherland, the world has lost a wonderful person with your passing."
Morag informed her hometown of the news through the Port Glasgow Memories page on Facebook.
She said: "I don't know how many already know. My sister Elizabeth Sutherland was shot and killed Saturday night."
Stunned locals flooded the page with messages of condolence and support for Morag's family.
