TARGETS CLASH

Sajid Javid refused SEVEN times to back Theresa May’s drive to cut net migration to ‘tens of thousands’

In the Commons, Mrs May said 'that we keep net migration down to tens of thousands, and that's fair to working people'

THERESA MAY slapped down Sajid Javid yesterday after he refused SEVEN TIMES to back her drive to cut net migration to the “tens of thousands”.

The Home Secretary had said he was committed to bringing down the numbers – and the “objective” of tackling sky-high immigration.

But challenged seven times by the BBC he refused to put the totemic “tens of thousands” figure on it.

Speaking in the Commons, Mrs May – a former Home Secretary - insisted the numerical target remained in place, with a simple “Yes”.

Referring to the Immigration White Paper, she later insisted: “This does enable us to make sure that we are attracting the brightest and the best.

“That we keep net migration down to sustainable levels, to the tens of thousands, and that it is fair to working people.”

The barbs follow a bitter Cabinet row over the Immigration White Paper. Cabinet Minister claimed the PM was “isolated” and in “a minority of one” in her bid to halt low-skilled immigration.

Last night the Chancellor appear to side with the Home Secretary by posting a message on Twitter praising the commitment to “consider the needs of business and the economy” in the strategy.
