Cabinet ministers hatching plot to keep Theresa May as PM for two more YEARS
This plan will cause uproar among Eurosceptics who want Mrs May out after the UK leaves the EU at the end of March
CABINET Ministers are plotting to keep Theresa May in Downing Street for at least TWO more years, we can reveal.
The embattled PM would be given time to deliver Brexit and bring through the next generation of talent under the plan.
Senior figures who have discussed the blueprint want her to hand over the keys to Number 10 in late summer 2021.
The next Prime Minister would then be given around nine months to prepare their new team ahead of the next general election - scheduled for 2022.
But the succession plan will cause uproar among Eurosceptics who want Mrs May to depart shortly after the UK formally leaves the EU in March next year.
But insiders say the move would allow the PM to carry out at least two more reshuffles before departing.
The first one - to be expected shortly after March next year - would allow her to “slay” the old guard, a Cabinet source said.
Figures such as Chancellor Philip Hammond, Transport Secretary Chris Grayling and possible Business Secretary Greg Clark would be vulnerable to the axe.
The source said: “There is a real opportunity to bring in a new wave of Tory MPs through.”
The PM would effectively be given until the summer of 2021 to be in charge when a leadership contest would be triggered.
The new leader would have their new team in place before they make a speech at conference that year.
Favourites to take over include Home Secretary Sajid Javid, ex-Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab and International Aid Secretary Penny Mordaunt.
The PM has just successfully fought a no confidence vote amongst Tory MPs winning by 200 votes to 117.
It means she is safe from another challenge until next December.

Before the ballot was held, Mrs May told her MPs she wouldn’t fight the next election.
However, the PM is under huge pressure to get her withdrawal agreement through the Commons. If that fails, the UK will leave the EU under a no deal scenario.
But one Eurosceptics Tory MP last night said: “The PM must go as soon as practically possible after we leave the EU.
“We don’t want her or her advisers working on the future trade deal with the EU. It just can’t happen.”
