WIFE'S MURDER APPEAL

Woman who killed ‘abusive’ husband has won permission to launch attempt to overturn murder conviction

Fresh evidence that Georgina 'Sally' Challen was a victim of his 'coercive and controlling' behaviour will be heard by the Court of Appeal next year.

A WIFE serving life for the hammer murder of her “abusive” husband has won permission to launch a new attempt to reduce her conviction to manslaughter.

Fresh evidence that Sally Challen was a long-standing victim of Richard’s “coercive and controlling” behaviour will be heard by the Court of Appeal in February.

Challen, 64, who has served seven years, was portrayed at her trial as a jealous wife who battered Richard to death because she believed he was having an affair. After killing him she drove from their home in Claygate, Surrey, to Beachy Head, where The Samaritans talked her out of committing suicide.

Son David, 31, said yesterday: “We’re hoping my mother’s abuse is recognised. In doing so, it will be seen as a factor in our father’s death.”

The campaign group Justice for Women, led by human rights lawyer Harriet Wistrich, went to the Appeal Court in March to argue a law change made “coercive and controlling” behaviour a criminal offence.
David’s support for his mother is backed by his elder brother James, 34. Sally is in HMP Send, Guildford.
