Furious mum of R Kelly’s alleged ‘child bride’ Aaliyah slams claims rapper had sex with 15-year-old daughter
The allegations are made in an eye-opening six-part documentary which airs tonight in the US and features interviews dozens of former friends, family members and colleagues of Kelly who all make claims about the singer abusing women and girls
SINGER Aaliyah’s mum has branded claims made in a documentary that R-Kelly had an underage sex with her daughter as “lies and fabrication”.
Lifetime's upcoming Surviving R. Kelly, which airs tonight in the US, sees Jovante Cunningham claiming to have witnessed the Ignition star commit statutory rape on the then teen.
Cunningham, a former backing singer, claimed she was on a tour with 15-year-old Aaliyah when she allegedly witnessed R-Kelly having sex with the teen pop star.
When asked what she saw, the back-up singer replied: “Things that an adult should not be doing with a child.
“I can’t stress to you how people are still suffering behind things that went on 20 years ago.”
But Aaliyah’s furious mum, Diane Haughton, claims Cunningham is “a liar”.
She told : “The woman and so-called back up singer that describes seeing, meeting or ever breathing the same air as my daughter, Aaliyah, is lying and is a liar.
"My husband and I were always on tour with her and at interviews and every place she went throughout her entire career.
“Whoever this woman is, I have never seen her before anywhere on planet earth, until now."
Also during 1994 it was widely reported Kelly and Aaliyah had secretly married, but both denied it.
Kelly went on to become her mentor, as well as lead songwriter and producer of her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number.
Aaliyah cut ties with Kelly after the accusations of illegal marriage.
She tragically died in a plane crash in 2002, aged 22, shortly after filming a music video in the Bahamas.
The eye-opening six-part documentary interviews dozens of former friends, family members and colleague of Kelly who all make claims about the singer abusing women and girls.
But Kelly refutes all the allegations made against him.
And according to entertainment website his lawyer has threatened to sue the makers of the documentary which also for the first time ever features people from Kelly's inner circle coming forward with new allegations.
