MILLENNIAL politician Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has claimed the "world will end in 12 years" because of climate change.
The influential Democrat - who has 4.5million followers on Twitter and Instagram - said the issue was her generation's "World War Two".
Ms Ocasio-Cortez, dubbed AOC, has made waves in Washington since being elected the youngest ever member of Congress at 29.
Yesterday she spoke out on global warming and "immoral" billionaires at an event celebrating advocacy on Martin Luther King day.
She said: “Millennials and people, you know, Gen Z and all these folks that will come after us are looking up and we’re like, ‘The world is gonna end in 12 years if we don’t address climate change and your biggest issue is how are we gonna pay for it?'."
It is believed she was making reference to a UN-backed climate report last year, which said climate change would run dangerously out of control unless emissions were halved by 2030.
She slammed colleagues in her own party for "abdicating responsibility" on global warming and said activists like her should "breathe fire" to make their point.
RUFFLED FEATHERS
She also hit out at America's "immoral" economic system which "allows billionaires to exist when there are parts of Alabama where people are still getting ringworm because they don’t have access to public health."
Ms Ocasio-Cortez, who calls herself a democratic socialist, has ruffled feathers within the Democrat party since taking her seat in the House of Representatives this month.
She was elected after beating a senior Democrat in the primaries to be candidate in her district covering parts of Queens and the Bronx in New York.
She advocates the Green New Deal, which aims to address economic inequality and climate change.
Her outspoken ways and social media savvy have won her legions of fans, especially among younger voters, but also criticism from established politicians within her own party and personal attacks from right-wingers.
Last night she said she gives "zero f***s" about what people think of her speaking her mind during an interview with telly comic Stephen Colbert.
Earlier this month an attempt to embarrass her with a goofy Breakfast Club-style dance video she made in college backfired on her critics.

An anonymous Twitter troll wrote alongside the clip: "America’s favorite commie know-it-all acting like the clueless nitwit she is."
She hit back with a new video dancing in Congress and was backed by a host of celebs and thousands of admirers.
Right wingers also tried to smear her with a fake nude picture of a woman in the bath, which was debunked by foot fetishists.
