Barbara Dring of Birmingham’s Public Protection Committee told the crown court:

“Customers using the city’s restaurants and takeaways quite rightly expect these food establishments to be clean and hygienic, but what environmental health officers found at the Taste of Khyber restaurant during repeated visits was nothing short of disgusting".

In a phone complaint, the council was also told that “mice were running around the kitchen and seated dining area”.

Zahoor Khan, boss of the inner-city outlet, admitted 12 food hygiene offences between September 2017 and last June.

The now-clean restaurant and takeaway got the fine and he was handed a suspended jail term. He must also do 60 hours of unpaid work.

He was also ordered to pay costs of £3,393 to the city council.

The restaurant remains open and the court heard staff had now taken relevant food hygiene training and tests.
