THE Fred and Rose West documentary was cancelled less than an hour before it was due to air last night.

ITV said it suddenly pulled Fred and Rose West: The Real Story because of "legal reasons".

The programme - presented by Sir Trevor McDonald - was due to shine a light on the evil couple who tortured, raped and murdered women before burying them in their home.

It was due to be broadcast at 9pm but was replaced by a different Sir Trevor McDonald documentary.

A spokeswoman for ITV told The Sun Online the doc was dramatically dropped because of legal issues.

The channel said in a statement: "Broadcast has been postponed for legal reasons and the film will be scheduled for a later date."

The brand new and very powerful programme features exclusive interviews and insights into one of most disturbing murder cases in British criminal history – Fred and Rose West and the Gloucester House of Horrors.

On Twitter, ITV announced the cancellation, adding: "Instead another chance to watch Death Row with Trevor McDonald."

Would-be viewers have responded to the tweet with fury.

One wrote: "I've looked forward to watching this all bloody day!!"

Some said the sudden cancellation "spoilt" their evening while others added they were "sorely disappointed seeing as it's been advertised everywhere".

"Well that's a bit reckless. Well done ITV, disappointed half the country here," wrote another.
