FGM LAW PLEDGE

Theresa May promises to change law on female genital mutilation after draft bill was blocked by Tory MP Sir Christopher Chope

Theresa May promises to bring back FGM law to the Commons after Chope blocked it

THERESA May personally pledged to bring back a draft law to crackdown on female genital mutilation as she slammed the veteran Tory MP who blocked it last week.

Sir Christopher Chope last week used parliamentary procedure to halt the draft law sponsored by fellow Tory MP Zac Goldsmith passing through Parliament.

The bill proposed a change to child welfare laws that would have allowed courts to protect children at risk of FGM.

It was intended to stop young kids being taken abroad by their parents to undergo the horrific and permanently damaging procedure.

But when it was announced in the Commons today, Sir Christopher shouted “object” - single-handedly stopping the law from going any further.

It sparked a furious reaction from all parties - and yesterday the PM vowed to find government time to bring the bill back to the Commons.

Speaking at Prime Minister’s Questions yesterday, Mrs May said: It’s only right that we find time for this bill and the Government will find time to deliver it.”
