Labour MP claims Brexit will lead to war in Europe and warns today’s children could one day return to the Continent ‘in uniform’
Shadow Treasury minister Clive Lewis also said Labour was 'sending some mixed messages' which he warned was 'dangerous.'
A SHADOW Minister yesterday claimed Brexit will lead to a war in Europe – as he panned Labour for enabling a “Tory Brexit”.
Clive Lewis told a “Love Socialism, Hate Brexit” event in Westminster that today’s children “could be back in Europe in a few years’ time, but in uniform”.
In a further sign of discipline breaking down in the party, the shadow Treasury minister warned that Labour faced being “utterly and comprehensively destroyed” at the next General Election if it allowed Theresa May’s Brexit deal to pass.
And in a thinly-veiled attack on Jeremy Corbyn, Mr Lewis added: “We are now sending some mixed messages out there and that is truly dangerous.”
He told the event: “My fear is this, if we walk away from Europe now my children, your children, or possibly our grandchildren, but probably our children could be back in Europe in a few years time - but in uniform. And I don’t want to see that happen.”
It separately emerged that a handful of Labour’s pro-EU rebels could quit the party in two weeks’ time.
Led by senior figures such as Chris Leslie, they are planning to give Mr Corbyn an ultimatum to back a second referendum by the end of the month - or they will quit the party.
In the latest show of bitter fighting in Labour yesterday, Mr Leslie accused Mr Corbyn of “playing us for fools” by refusing to back a second Brexit vote.
LABOUR FACES BEING 'DESTROYED'
He said he found it “heartbreaking” that the Labour party had so far refused to back a so-called People’s Vote.
Speaking in the Commons debate on Brexit yesterday, Mr Leslie said: “By now we should have reached the stage of a public vote. No one can explain to me why we are not at that particular stage now.
"It is a moment we needed leadership and we are seeing party political calculations tragically putting themselves ahead of national interest.”
The leadership was also pelted by veteran Labour MP Ben Bradshaw, who said it would be “far, far too late” for Labour to call for a second referendum in March with just a few days left.
In another bout of infighting last night the former Labour Europe Minister Caroline Flint aimed a broadside at her colleague Yvette Cooper over her Brexit-wrecking amendment she has vowed to bring back to the Commons later this month.
She said her proposed draft law to avoid a no deal was actually a “Trojan Horse” for stopping Brexit.
And Ms Flint, who has vowed to vote for the PM’s Brexit deal, told Huffington Post that her proposal - to be tabled in a fortnight - will be “even worse” than her defeated amendment last month, which called for our EU departure to be delayed until the end of the year.
This is because her fresh proposals sets no time limit for the delay to Brexit - meaning Britain could be left in the EU indefinitely.
