Some mums and dads from the predominantly Muslim area said they would rather leave the country than let their children carry on with the lessons.

Children were kept out of class for the first hour of the day, with some joining in chants on the street.

They held signs reading "education not indoctrination" and "let kids be kids."

Members of an evangelical Christian group also joined them in demonstrating.

Parkfield - rated outstanding by Ofsted - offers five lessons a year covering age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.

Mum-of-three Fatima Shah, 29, has started a petition demanding Parkfield Community School in Birmingham stops teaching children about homosexuality, which is banned under Islam.

She said yesterday: “It’s totally wrong. Children are being told it’s OK to be gay yet 98 per cent of children at this school are Muslim.

"It’s a Muslim community. I’ve taken my daughter out and other parents have, too.”

Mr Moffat, who was made an MBE for campaigning against homophobia, has piloted a reading programme called No Outsiders.

It means the 470 pupils at Parkfield are read stories such as Mommy, Mama and Me and King & King.

Labour councillor Mohammed Idrees has told the school it must listen to parents’ concerns.

But Parkfield denied any children had been withdrawn.

It said: “No Outsiders allows us to raise awareness of these differences so that children are able to tolerate differences in our society.”
