CONTROVERSIAL YouTube star Logan Paul claims brain damage he suffered when he was younger is the reason for his "lack of empathy" as an adult.

The vlogger, who was slammed for sharing a sick video showing a man hanging from a tree in Japan, was told this is why he was, in his own words, "emotionally unavailable" and "f***ed up".

Los Angeles-based Paul – also an actor – has previously come under fire for posting controversial content for his more than five million subscribers on YouTube.

As well as sharing a video of a man who committed suicide in Japan, he has also sparked outrage for trying to cast a "real albino woman" in a video and a clip in which he pretends to rip out a person's heart.

However he recently sought help at a clinic to find out "why I’m so f****d up, why I think and act the way I do, why I’m emotionally unavailable… I’m a bit of a hooligan, a troublemaker per se".

Speaking with a doctor before having a brain scan, Paul said that he was a "little troublemaker up until 5th grade.

"I didn’t focus very much; I was one of those kids that didn’t care, and then 5th grade hit and then I shifted from being a hooligan to actually studying. I became a good egg, but man, something happened in the past."

Paul told the doctor that although never officially diagnosed with ADD, he was "positive I have a mild form of it".

The doctor then asked him about past head injuries.

Titanium plate in skull

Paul suffered a 10mm skull fracture in the 7th grade, explaining: “I have a titanium plate in my head actually.”

He also recalled "always getting hit in the head" while playing football, adding that he got “f****d up because of it”.

Paul shared footage on his YouTube channel, showing him undergoing a diagnostic test involving a 3-D model being made of his brain.

The doctor told him: “You have very significant injury" as he pointed to "holes" in the scan image.

He added: "This is really important because right here is the most human, thoughtful part of us. It makes you human.

"It’s called the prefrontal cortex… it’s 30 per cent of the human brain, and you hurt it which means you’re going to have trouble with focus, forethought, follow-through, organisation, planning and empathy, and learning from the mistakes you make."

Paul said it was "amazing" to know there was an explanation for his controversial behaviour.

"No drugs or alcohol"

The doctor then recommended the YouTube star avoid “anything that hurts it [for example] drugs, alcohol. Are you doing anything you shouldn’t be doing?"

Paul replied: "I drink – a lot. I go hard."

The doctor told him: “Alcohol is not your friend".

Asked whether he took part in “any high risk behaviour”, Paul admitted he did because “the problem is I need clickbait”.

The doctor told Paul he can find smarter ways of getting clickbait, with the medic's help.
