SUPPORTERS have launched a campaign to free an artist jailed for biting a chunk off her "abusive" husband's tongue.
Nara Walker, originally from Australia, is serving a three-month jail sentence in Iceland after losing her final appeal bid last month.
Campaigners claim Nara, 28, is a victim of domestic abuse and are demanding an official pardon.
More than 40,000 people have calling on Iceland's president to set her free.
Nara raised her fist in protest as she walked into Hólmsheiði women's prison on February 20, flanked by supporters with symbolic tape over their mouths.
She had been unable to leave the country for the previous 15 months since a bust-up at her Reykjavik flat in November 2017.
Nara was prosecuted for assault after she bit off a one-inch section of her French husband's tongue.
She says she acted in self-defence as he pushed her up a staircase and forcibly stuck his tongue in her mouth.
In January she claimed he had subjected her to years of physical abuse and also forced himself on her during their allegedly abusive marriage.
She told : "What am I meant to do when a man twice my size, who has used all accounts of violence against me over the years again and again, beats me up and carries me back inside my home to hold me against my will as prisoner to then force himself on to me?"
He forced his tongue into my mouth... I reacted without thought or intent."

Nara also told how the couple had been partying with an American tourist they had met and an Icelandic woman, reports.
She said things took a disturbing turn after she tried to leave with the American man and her angry husband pushed the man down the stairs.
She claimed he pushed her back on to the stairs and also punched her, leaving her with bruises and a broken rib that cops ignored.
Nara said: "I was crying and he kept yelling that I was his and calling me insults.
"I was still finding it difficult to breathe and he forced his tongue into my mouth. I reacted without thought or intent."
Her ex-husband’s tongue was reattached but is shorter than before, which he claims has left him with a permanent speech impediment.
Nara said authorities appeared to have no interest in bringing charges against him and "deemed me guilty as soon as they walked into my apartment".
Her 12-month jail sentence was increased to 18 months on appeal, with all but three months suspended.
Then she lost her bid to have a further appeal heard in Iceland's highest court in February.
Her mother Jane Walker : "It has been the hardest time of our lives.
"We believed in the system. We were thinking at least it’s in Iceland. Iceland does great things for women. There’s gender equality, there’s equal pay.
"You think you’ll be heard. But she wasn’t."
