She lived a long life and was happily married to Prince Albert and they had many children together – but how many? We explain it all.
How many children did Queen Victoria and Prince Albert?
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert had nine children.
She named her first child Victoria, who was born in November 1840.
Her eight other children were: Albert, Edward, Alice, Alfred, Helena, Louise, Arthur, Leopold and Beatrice.
Queen Victoria sough to have her children married to various other royal families and people of nobility.
Her children married:
- Her first child Victoria married Prince Frederick William of Prussia, later German Emperor Frederick III.
- Albert Edward married Alexandra of Denmark and became King Edward VII after his mum died.
- Alice married Prince Louis of Hesse and the Rhine in 1862.
- Alfred married became the Duke of Edinburgh in 1866 and went on to marry Grand Duchess Marie of Russia.
- Helena married German Prince Christian of Schleswig-Holstein in 1866.
- Louise married John Campbell, later the 9th Duke of Argyll in March 1871.
- Arthur married Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia.
- Leopold married Princess Helena of Waldeck-Pyrmont in 1882.
- Beatrice married Prince Henry of Battenberg in 1884.
When did Victoria and Albert marry?
After meeting in April 1836 at Victoria's 17th birthday celebrations, the pair instantly fell for each other, and enjoyed playing piano duets together.
A few years later, per royal protocol, Victoria proposed to Albert in October 1939, in German.
On February 10, 1840, the wedding took place, and it was the first marriage of a reigning English Queen since Bloody Mary's almost 300 years before.
When is the third series of Victoria on TV?
Season three will be back on ITV this Sunday (March 24, 2019) at 9pm.
