Chaps in Birmingham and Solihull got the biggest lift last year.

They topped the table for pills and were second in the queue for pumps behind men in North, East and West Devon.

Some 16,433 aids were given out by GPs last year — up from 6,543 in 2008 — official data reveals.

Doctors issued 4.4million scripts for sex pills — up from 2 million in 2008.

Viagra, right, cost about £7 a tablet a decade ago. Now a generic version costs the NHS just 15p.

Experts said falling prices had made it easier for GPS to dole out sex pills — which cost the NHS £33.7million in 2018, compared to £69.8million a decade earlier.

Dr Geoff Hackett, ex-president of the British Society for Sexual Medicine, said: “This rise in prescribing has to be good news, because there are twice as many men — and couples — getting help with the love lives.

“Older men don’t want to be playing cards in the pub, but to have an active love life.”

Around five million Brits — 40 per cent of older blokes — suffer impotence, which is the inability to get an erection.

Causes can be psychological or physical, from stress and depression to conditions which hit blood flow, including heart disease and diabetes.
