Former police officer Cassie Barker jailed for 20 years over the death of Cheyenne Hyer in Mississippi
A POLICE officer who left her three-year-old daughter to roast to death in her 40C patrol car while she had sex with her boss has been jailed for 20 years.
Cassie Barker, 29, strapped little Cheyenne Hyer into a seat for four hours while she romped with her supervisor Clark Ladner.
A court heard she left the engine running outside his home with the air conditioner on, but it was not blowing cold air.
After the tryst she found Cheyenne unconscious and rushed her to hospital with a severe high temperature of 41.7C.
She died later that evening in September 2016.
The negligent mum - who is pregnant again - admitted manslaughter last month in a plea deal after she was initially charged with second degree murder.
Yesterday she was given the maximum 20-year sentence by a judge in Mississippi, US.
Cheyenne's father Ryan Hyer had begged the court for the stiffest possible penalty, saying he was haunted by the tragedy, .
He told the judge: "Every time I see a patrol car, I see Cheyenne gasping for air.
“I’ve blamed myself for everything. Life has been a complete hell. There’s no sentence big enough that will ever bring her back to us.”
The court heard it was not the first time Barker had left the tot alone in a car.
A passerby had called police when they saw Cheyenne in a vehicle parked outside a strip mall in Gulfport.
During her plea hearing, she admitted she was having sex with her police supervisor while Cheyenne was dying of heatstroke.
Ladner, her boss, was sacked from the force but faced no charges. He told investigators he did not know his lover had left her child in the car.
Mr Hyer is suing the police, claiming they should have done more after the first instance of child neglect.
