MPS had to pull the plug on their business for the day after water started pouring in through the roof - showing it's not just democracy that's crumbing in Westminster.

The Commons was shut down thanks to a massive flood - so loud politicians couldn't hear each other speak.

The nonstop leak coming through the ceiling of the Commons chamber was blamed on a burst pipe.

An investigation is now under way to locate the exact cause of the flood.

As water began to pour through the ceiling, Labour's Justin Madders said: "I hope I can complete my speech before rain stops play.

"I think there is probably some kind of symbol about how many people view how broken our Parliament is."

But as the leak continued, Deputy Speaker Lindsay Hoyle ordered an end to the day's proceedings.

Scottish Tory MP Ross Thomson quipped: "Not the first time there has been a leak in Parliament I’m sure."

Andrea Leadsom, the minister responsible for Commons business, added: "Rain stops play..."

A spokesman for Parliament said: "The leak was urgently dealt with and has now been isolated. The House of Commons maintenance team is currently assessing the damage.

"We would like to clarify this was not a sewage leak."

The Palace of Westminster is undergoing round-the-clock renovation works to shore up the crumbling and leaking building.

MPs are considering moving out of the building for at least a year to allow a thorough overhaul.
