PAEDOPHILE football coach Barry Bennell was awarded £89,348 of taxpayers’ cash as he tried to evade justice and sue prison staff.
The legal aid cheques began 20 years ago and include £4,880 for a clinical negligence claim during a previous prison term in 2005.
Last year Bennell, 65, spent £77,789 fighting child abuse claims.
He was convicted of 43 historical offences against youngsters training at Manchester City and Crewe Alexandra, and jailed for 30 years.
Details of Bennell’s bills came via a Freedom of Information request.
A Ministry of Justice spokeswoman said: “Anyone facing a Crown Court trial is eligible for legal aid subject to a strict means test.
