Mum who gave six-month-old son brain injuries by shaking him can keep baby
The woman, 36, was suffering from depression when she hurt child in 2016
A MOTHER who gave her six-month-old son brain injuries by shaking him has walked free from court and been allowed to keep the baby.
The 36-year-old woman, who cannot be named, was suffering depression when the boy, now three, was hurt.
Prosecutor Matthew Cobbe told the court that the baby needed CPR when paramedics arrived at the family home.
Cardiff crown court heard he has made a good recovery, been returned to his mother at home near Newport and is “thriving” in her care.
The woman first denied causing GBH but changed her plea to guilty.
She was given a 15-month jail term suspended for a year.

Consultant neuroradiologist Dr Neil Stoodley who examined scans of the baby’s brain and spinal chord said in his report: “All the abnormalities are explicable by an episode of abusive head trauma, the likely mechanism being shaking.”
An MRI scan found the baby had subdural hematomas, injuries to the deeper tissues of the brain and eye haemorrhages.
