Amber Rudd flirts with leadership bid as she sets out vision to transform the Conservative Party
The Work and Pensions Secretary wants to turn the Tories into the party of the 21st Century worker
AMBER Rudd will flirt with a leadership bid as she sets out her big vision to turn the Tories into the party of the 21st Century worker.
The Work and Pensions Secretary will call for the Government to do more to support Brits of all backgrounds “outperform” expectations and get well-paid jobs.
She will say the Tories must take advantage of the opportunities of the rise of artificial intelligence rather than “hark back” to the past like Jeremy Corbyn.
Ms Rudd has already publicly said she is considering taking a run at the Tory leadership when Theresa May is finally ousted.
In her first big speech on her DWP brief in London, she will say: “As Conservatives we want every person, no matter their background, to progress in the workplace and outperform what society says they should be able to do.
“These values are at the heart of what I will do at the DWP.”
Ms Rudd will tell how she switched careers from the City to become an MP as she sets out her plans to give more support to Brits who want to change jobs.
EMBRACE TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGE
And she will say Britain must embrace technological changes rather than simply glorify the past.
Slamming, Mr Corbyn, she will tell an audience in London: “I understand that the certainty of the old industries, of guaranteed jobs for life, offer an attractive nostalgia.
“But harking back to the Dark Satanic Mills of the past is not the solution. We can’t stop the clock– even if we wanted to. And history shows that we can be positive.
“No one looks back now and thinks, I wish the Luddites had won.”
Meanwhile, in a speech tonight, Tory MP Priti Patel will call for a “new generation of political leaders to effectively take back control”.
