A FAMILY has racked up more than £4,000 in fines for parking outside their house, after they asked for double yellow lines on the street.
Parents Scott and Casey Taylor called for lines to be painted in Mayan Avenue, Salford, Greater Manchester, after their four-year-old daughter was knocked down by a car and injured.
They hoped it would help to reduce the number of cars parking on the street, making it safer for pedestrians to cross the road, but the request has come back to bite them.
Salford Council went ahead with plans to install double yellows in the street about 18 months ago.
But dad Scott continued to park outside his house as he had before - and has ended up accruing a massive debt in parking fines.
Scott claims residents were told that gaps would be left outside their homes, so they could still park there, and insists that the lines were painted outside his home by mistake.
TAKING HIS CHANCES
He claims that when he realised what was happening, he rushed outside to speak to the contractor, who he says apologised but told him it was too late to remove them immediately.
Salford Council said the fines had been issued correctly - and that Scott has no need to park on the lines as there is unrestricted parking elsewhere on the street, .
But Scott says he has been left with no choice but to take his chances parking on the lines, because the terms of his car insurance mean that his vehicle has to be left outside his house at night.
And, although the family have a driveway, they have two cars.
Scott, who has even had a visit from the bailiffs, says the council has advised him to apply for funding to have the lines removed, or park elsewhere.

The 33-year-old said: "I got a letter and they [the council] just told me to apply to a funding scheme.
"I've had about £4,000 in parking tickets and I've had to pay a bailiff £400 when he clamped my car.
"How can I leave my car somewhere else when it says in my insurance that it's parked outside my house at night? I'm getting in a lot of debt.
";I want them to come out and fix it. I feel like they are just fobbing me off."
Salford Council did not confirm or deny that the lines had been painted outside Mr Taylor's home by mistake, but they insisted that the fines had been issued correctly.

A spokesman for Salford City Council said: “This section of parking restrictions was put in to protect access to Southworth Court for emergency vehicles and refuse trucks when the traffic order was made in November 2017.
"All the properties on Mayan Avenue have off-road parking and a significant length of the road is not restricted so there is no reason for anyone to park illegally.
"The parking fines have been correctly issued. We are happy to discuss this issue with Mr Taylor to try and find a resolution.”
