Theresa May will break another record as Parliament sits for its 300th day

The current session is the longest since the English Civil War

But is unlikely to beat the 3,322 sitting days of the Long Parliament during the Civil War, which was only ended when Cromwell ordered his soldiers to forcibly remove MPs in 1653.

Parliamentary sessions usually last the same as an academic year or a season of sport - with the Queen opening Parliament to announce a year’s worth of legislation.

After the 2017 General Election Mrs May decided Brexit required an extra year and there has been an unprecedented number of sitting days because she cancelled MPs’ holiday in a bid to break the impasse.

MPs sat for less than four hours - leaving four hours earlier than normal for a Monday.

One Tory MP said: “I don’t know what this is but it’s not Government. We are squatting in the Palace of Westminster.”

But the PM’s spokesman said: “The government decided on an extended session to deliver the legislation for Brexit and that work is ongoing.”
