ASHES TO ASHES

Freddie Starr’s sister wants to scatter his ashes on parents’ grave as family inundated with free funeral offers

The comic was found dead in his Spanish home last week, aged 76

FREDDIE Starr's sister has revealed how she wants to scatter the comic's ashes on their parents' grave - as the family has been inundated with free funeral offers.

The entertainer, 76, had been found dead alone in his Spanish home last week, with fears the popular comedian could end up in a pauper's grave overseas.

But Starr's family has since received a number of offers to help return his body to the UK.

Speaking to the Sun Online, sister Brenda Hughes, 79, revealed how she wants a quiet ceremony for the loud-mouthed star who had become a virtual recluse in his last years.

She said: "Freddie loved Spain but I’d like him to be cremated in Liverpool and then have his ashes scattered over his mum and dad’s grave in West Derby cemetery.

"That way he’ll be with somebody now he’s gone.

"I’d prefer a family funeral rather than a big showbiz one."

Starr's carer Nelly Georgieva had last week revealed how she could not afford a basic Spanish funeral, which costs about £2,800.

This means that if Starr's body goes unclaimed, he would be cremated by the local hospital and his ashes left in a public cemetery in an unmarked grave.

But a source confirmed to that Starr would be laid to rest alongside his mum Hilda at the family plot in Liverpool's Huton area.

They said: "Freddie adored his mum. She was the driving force behind his career by encouraging him to do gigs in pubs and clubs.”

It was last night revealed that Starr's family were holding emergency talks with Spanish officials to bring his body home.

'DEVASTATED' OVER SEX CLAIMS

Brenda had yesterday revealed how her younger brother had been left "devastated" after be was accused of groping a woman in Jimmy Savile's dressing room in 1974.

He sued the woman - but was sent into a downward spiral of ill health when he lost the case.

Brenda, who said she learnt of the news of Freddie's death on the TV news, said: "Freddie telephoned me after the case ended.

“I think it had a big impact on him both mentally and physically.

“He felt devastated and I don’t think he ever properly recovered."

One of Freddie Starr’s last performances was a shambling karaoke Elvis impression at a bar in Fuengirola. Videos of a bloated Freddie in a T-shirt and shorts belting out hits with locals surfaced on Facebook.

A pal said: “He was mortified when that footage got out and realised how far he’d fallen. He wasn’t his old self after that.”

The neighbour added: “It was such a sad end from someone who’d been loved by millions.”

Among those to offer to help repatriate Freddie's body was Michael Fogg, a kind-hearted funeral director.

The 54-year-old, who runs Sheffield's Michael Fogg Family Funeral Directors, decided to step up after reading Starr had died.

Freddie’s passport expired in April, which also makes repatriation a little more complicated, but not impossible.
