Brit teacher, 24, fighting for life and stranded in Dubai after horror horse riding accident
Rebecca Chisholm fell the day before her 24th birthday
A BRITISH woman has been left fighting for her life in Dubai after being thrown off a horse.
Rebecca Chisholm, 24, is now stranded in the United Arab Emirates until she can pay off her £60,000 medical bill, a family friend claims.
The primary school teacher’s loved ones are now trying to raise money to cover the cost, as well as a flight home that would cost an estimated £30,000.
Rebecca, from Nottingham, remains in intensive care after she suffered multiple skull fractures and a traumatic brain injury in the horrific horse riding accident the day before her birthday.
She was airlifted to a state-run hospital and underwent two procedures to stem the bleed on her brain and relieve the pressure, according to a set up by a family friend.
The page raised more than £23,000 in the first 24 hours out of the £30,000 goal.
BIRTHDAY TRAGEDY
Although Rebecca has insurance through the school she works at, the firm refused to cover the medical costs as she was injured while riding a horse, a friend told the.
The former Manchester Metropolitan University student has her mother, Wendy Skelton, at her bedside, as she had flown out to celebrate her daughter’s 24th birthday.
Rebecca moved to Dubai last August and signed a two-year contract to teach at a primary school.
Close friend Liudmila Davey, who started the fundraiser, said of the mother and daughter: “They are very lovely people. Wendy is a very kind person. We are so grateful for everyone’s support.”
Wendy raised her daughter alone after Rebecca’s father died eight years ago.
When Becca regained consciousness she told Wendy that she was dying and that she loved her
The GoFundMe page for Rebecca
The GoFundMe page reads: “Becca’s horse bolted and she was thrown violently from the horse.
“She landed badly and sustaining serious head injuries. Wendy found her unconscious.
“When Becca regained consciousness she told Wendy that she was dying and that she loved her.
“Wendy told her she was not leaving her and kept talking to her until the ambulance arrived to initiate the treatment.
“With enormous relief, Becca started to regain consciousness on Sunday but was still not out of danger.
“In the days following, Wendy has been constantly at Becca’s side encouraging her to eat and gain strength to recover.
“Her treatment are very expensive and medical air transport back to the UK will need to be arranged.
“The bills are now mounting and whilst the medical staff are now talking about releasing Becca for a specialised flight back to a UK hospital for continued care, Wendy will not be allowed to leave Dubai until the full bill has been paid.
“Becca went to Dubai to teach the next generation of children out there and likely to take years to recover from this traumatic brain injury. We don’t even know if she’ll ever be able to teach again.”
An update on the page today explained Rebecca will remain in intensive care for two days followed by a week inside a ward.
If she remains stable, she is likely to be discharged for medical evacuation to the UK.
