Theresa May under mounting pressure to ban Chinese tech giant Huawei after Google blocks controversial firm
THERESA May is today under mounting pressure to ban Huawei after Google blocked the Chinese tech giant.
One of Mrs May's own MPs said it's "bizarre" she is still considering letting the firm build Britain's new mobile networks.
And a top cop called on the PM to "look again" at shutting Huawei out of crucial IT systems.
The Government is reportedly planning to let Huawei build parts of the hi-tech 5G networks which are set to cover the country, but will exclude the company from the most sensitive areas.
The US has taken a much tougher line on the firm, which is linked to the Chinese government.
Today Google announced Huawei will no longer be able to use its apps or access its security updates, in a massive blow for the Chinese company.
'COMPROMISING SECURITY'
Bob Seely, a Tory MP who has been outspoken about the dangers posed by Huawei, said the decision highlights how isolated Britain's stance is.
He told The Sun: "We are lagging behind the global debate, we're the only country thinking about compromising security in favour of trade.
"There's also a big problem about Chinese human rights - there are big questions about the involvement of Chinese technology firms in the prison camps in Xinjiang province.
"It's bizarre and I think we are behind the curve."
Sir Peter Fahy, the former head of counter-terrorism in the UK, said: "They really have to look again because the US have shown how serious they are about it and it could threaten co-operation with America and other countries.
"President Trump is visiting next month and it will be discussed and he will put more pressure on about this."
