Tory leadership hopeful Rory Stewart vows to build TWO million new homes in five years if he becomes PM
THE Tories need to build two million new homes in five years in a state led blitz to compare with 1950 new towns, a shock leadership contender declares today.
Rory Stewart vows that if he made it to PM he would lead a £100billion housing revolution to end one of the "hundreds of injustices" facing voters.
It would essentially be led by the public sector with the building contracted out and financed through bonds raised against the homes.
The Cabinet Minister insists the Tories have to create a new generation of new towns and 'lineal cities" along the Thames to match the Milton Keynes, Basildon and Corby 60-70 years ago.
He told The Sun: "It would be a programme to transform the lives of young people."
"It would follow the Milton Keynes model, with a mix of homes to sell or rent.
"We could have 'lineal cites' built along the Thames or Mersey with trees, parks and fast transport connections."
It comes as Mr Stewart, who has marked the start of the Tory contest with 'walkabouts' in towns across the UK, insists that despite being a rank outsider in the leadership, he believes he can get to No.10.
'DAILY INJUSTICES'
Echoing the straight talking of his campaign so far, he declares he WOULDN'T cut tax - "we need a period of stability".
Instead he wants to tackle the "daily injustices" such as hospital car parking charges, over zealous traffic wardens and ensuring people can see a GP.
Explaining his walkabouts, he says: "I need to prove to members of Parliament that I can get Brexit done, and beat Jeremy Corbyn and win a General Election.
"The only way is to prove I am a person who can get people voting.

"And when I went to Warrington, to Wigan, I had people who have never voted Conservative who said they would vote for me."
He says some of his tweets are now being viewed by 400,000 people - and Tory MPs are finally getting in touch about his leadership bid.
He says: "If I can keep up momentum, turn the 500,000 views for a tweet into a million then I believe I can do something."
