HEALTH Secretary Matt Hancock has revealed how he once piled on three stone in three months.

Asked by The Sun what the unhealthiest thing he had ever done the Tory leadership candidate said he ate five meals a day for three months - including a daily one made up exclusively of flapjacks.

He was stockpiling ahead of six-week trek to the North Pole when he was aged 26.

Mr Hancock - one of 11 Tory leadership runners - said he got frostbite during the trip and ended up losing all the weight he put on.

Last weekend Mr Hancock revealed that the naughtiest thing he had ever done was to pretend he was commentating on the rugby for his student radio station live from Twickenham - when he was actually just in the pub.

But asked what the unhealthiest thing he had ever done, the Health Secretary said: “That’s easy. When I was in my 20s I went on an expedition to the North Pole.

"I played the most northerly game of cricket out on the Arctic ice and to prepare for that - instead of dragging all the food you need - because we took everything and pulled everything behind us in a pulk - I ate enormous amounts of food and I put on three stone, I ate five meals a day and one of those meals was entirely flapjack.

“I ended up getting frostbite and lost the weight whilst I was marching across the Arctic ice and came back fit as a fiddle.”

Mr Hancock is an outsider candidate to become the next PM after Theresa May goes.

He has won the support of Remainer MPs and is pushing to overtake other contenders such as Michael Gove and Jeremy Hunt.

The Health Secretary is a sport fanatic who recently filmed himself playing cricket in his Westminster office.
