MAJ DASH

The Queen could be forced to break summer holiday in Balmoral to meet next PM

THE Queen could be forced make a 500-mile dash next month - to allow the next Prime Minister to take office.

The monarch’s summer break at Balmoral is set to be interrupted for an Audience with the country’s next leader.

High-level talks between the Buckingham Palace and the Cabinet Office are underway to work out the logistics of the meeting.

The Queen travels to Scotland at the beginning of July for a week of engagements before heading to her Scottish estate until October.

Officials are now working out where and when she would first see the new PM.

However, the winner of the Tory leadership contest is scheduled to be announced the week of July 22.

In normal circumstances, Theresa May would go to the Palace where she will effectively cease to be Prime Minister.

The next leader will then meet the Queen and be asked whether they can form a government.

One option could be for the new Prime Minister to travel to Scotland.

Due to the timings with the Queen out of London, one source said there were “complications”.

Another well-placed source said no decisions had yet been made.

The monarch’s diary was interrupted by politics back in June 2017 when she presided over the State Opening of Parliament and then made her way to Royal Ascot just two hours later.
