Sajid Javid apologies to 46 Windrush victims targeted under the Home Office’s ‘hostile environment’ regime
SAJID JAVID has said sorry to 46 Windrush victims who were wrongly targeted under the Home Office’s “hostile environment” regime.
The Home Secretary has made personal apologies to the Caribbean migrants, some of whom had benefits stopped or driving licences revoked because officials mistakenly thought they had no right to live in Britain.
Others had “nudge” letters sent to their bosses by Home Office to check if they were allowed to work here, and one NHS patient was even left facing a bill for his treatment.
Mr Javid also wrote to nine seven criminals who were locked up as illegal immigrants at the end of their prison terms.
The apologies came after a historical review of all the deportations, detentions and “hostile environment” targeting of Commonwealth nationals who came to Britain before 1973 but lack the documentation to prove their residence.

He said: “I have been very clear that the experiences of some members of the Windrush generation has been completely unacceptable, which is why I am committed to right the wrongs of successive governments.
“I have personally apologised to those identified through this review and I will make sure they receive support and access to the compensation scheme.”
