A wedding ring described as “cursed” by its owner has reemerged two months after he tied it to the tail of a fish and threw it into Lake Michigan.
The ring was found looped onto a cable tie and secured to the tail of a rainbow trout by a competitor in a fishing tournament on Friday.
Joe Penar was left bemused when he reeled his catch and found such a valuable object on the end of his line.
But on Monday, the ring’s former owner came forward to explain he had thrown it away while trying to move past a decade-long marriage that ended four years ago.
Speaking to the , Capt. Jason Rose said: “I am a fishing guide. She was always against me following my dreams and hated how much I fished.
“I felt I needed to get rid of that ring but I didn’t want to just toss it to the bottom, pawn it or any of that kind of thing.
“So I released it the best way I know how.
“I am convinced that ring is cursed. My life has been nothing less than great since I released it.”
Rose said he released the ring at Whitehall, a port on the eastern edge of the lake, on May 4, nearly seven weeks before it was found.
He added: “I really just didn’t want to cause any issues with my ex.
“She seems to find the story somewhat amusing and none of us can believe someone caught it.’’
Now it seems Rose has passed on the ring’s bad luck to the owner of the boat from which it was caught.
Jim Nelligan, owner of the Grey Lion II, told : “That ring is cursed. Ever since it came on my boat, I’ve had problems with my engine controls.
“The switch to raise the helm floor to get at the engines broke and the hose at my dock burst.”
