China’s ambassador to the UK, Liu Xiaoming, issued a guarantee that Huawei would not pass secrets gleaned from the 5G network to Beijing.

Mr Liu said: “I can promise that, 100%. I think Huawei is a good company, it is a leader on 5G.

“I think if you reject Huawei you will miss enormous opportunities.

“They are here for win-win co-operation, they are not here to spy on people.”

Government security experts have advised PM Theresa May that it would be safe to allow Huawei to help with the network’s masts.

But the US has warned that would risk Transatlantic intelligence sharing and has sparked an angry Cabinet row.
