Donald Trump’s approval rating hits all time high as Democrat presidential hopefuls completely fail to find effective attack
DONALD Trump's approval rating has hit an all time high as divisions in the Democratic Party deepen.
The president's approval is at 44 per cent, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll, putting him two points up on his previous peak.
A booming economy and healthy jobs figures have helped raise his rating, putting him in prime position for a strong re-election campaign.
Although most voters polled said they found The Donald's personal conduct “unpresidential” a slim majority of 51 per cent approved of his handling of the economy for the first time.
The numbers come as a blow to his Democrat rivals as the deeply divided party chooses a candidate for the 2020 elections.
Former Vice President Joe Biden is best placed to unseat Trump according to polls of all voters but is struggling to find support within the party's left-leaning base.
The poll puts Obama's old number two ten points ahead of The Donald in a hypothetical run off, but his position as a centrist has made it difficult for him to ramp up support within the party.
Most recently the gaffe-prone 76-year-old was criticised for a remark he made about "gay waiters" at an LGBT event in Seattle.

Other candidates vying for the keys to the White House include Elizabeth Warren, 70, a Massachusetts senator, and Kamala Harris, 54, a black senator from California.
Bernie Sanders has also thrown his hat into the ring as has New York mayor Bill de Blasio and former Texas congressman Beto O'Rourke.
In total two dozen Democrats have declared their intention to run for the highest office.
The party is riven with divisions over race and immigration.
News of Trump's boosted approval rating comes as it is revealed Britain's ambassador to Washington had branded the president "inept" and "incompetent".
Sir Kim Darroch issued a series of damning indictments about the President in secret cables back to Whitehall over two years.

A massive tranche of the highly restricted memos – knows as "diptels" – was leaked over the weekend.
