If he did switch sides in the event of a BoJo victory, the new PM would see his Commons majority reduced to just TWO.

Mr Grieve is one of a handful of Tory MPs who are pushing for a second referendum to overturn Brexit.

Asked today if he could stay in the party under Mr Johnson, he : "I think it may be very difficult for me to remain.

"But I don't wish to leave the Conservative Party - of which I have been a member for 47 years.

"I would wait to see what he says and does, but... the reality of where we are in view of where I think he is likely to take us is going to mean I suspect it's going to be very difficult for me to do so."

Mr Grieve, the former Attorney General, has previously threatened to back a vote of no-confidence in the new PM to block a No Deal Brexit.

Other MPs could join him in the last-ditch bid to prevent Mr Hunt from taking us out of the EU without a deal on October 31.

But he is the first Tory to admit publicly that he is considering leaving the party altogether.
