Rees-Mogg, 50, the leader of the hardline Brexiteer ERG group, will now be joining the Cabinet for the first time.

Just before 11pm it was announced he had been appointed Lord President of the Council and Leader of the House of Commons.

He strongly opposed Theresa May’s handling of Brexit during her reign and will now play a key role in the process moving forward.

Mr Johnson has now rewarded his loyalty and support and Mr Rees-Mogg said he is "very interested" in his new role.

He told Sky News last night: “The Prime Minister kindly offered me a very interesting job to do, one that is something that I'm very interested in because parliamentary procedure and practice is something I've spent a lot of time on."

He described Mr Johnson as "incredibly businesslike and ready to crack on and deliver for the country".

He added: "It's a man with a mission and that mission is to get us out of the EU by October 31."

"Look what he did at education with Michael Gove, so I think this viewing of it purely as an election campaigning matter is not necessarily accurate.

"Yes he did brilliantly for Vote Leave and Vote Leave won, but Dominic has been hugely successful in the nitty gritty of policy."
